That Is How The Story Goes (click on title for lyrics)
(r preston maddox)
Some people live with no responsibility -
They go through life without a care
They blame it on their momma or society -
It’s anybody’s fault but theirs
On booze and drugs my money’s spent,
But it’s not my fault - it’s the President !
If he really cared about me he would pay my rent . . .
And that is how the story goes
I met an old acquaintance at the grocery store
Standing in the checkout line
Said she couldn’t feed one so she had three more
Never married not a single time
When I asked just why she pulled that stunt,
She told me “It’s my body, I’ll do what I want !”
Then she paid for all her groceries
With a food stamp book . . .
And that is how the story goes
Now the Good Book says to lend a hand
And look out for your fellow man
We are our brothers keeper, after all
But it's discouraging to see
In this modern economy
When someone who won't work
Makes more than me ! (What !?!?)
He gets a compensation check because of nerves -
He told the doctor he can’t cope
So he spends the day in front of his new TV set
Just drinkin’ beer & smokin’ dope
Now his lifestyle is not mine to judge
And my taxes paid I don’t begrudge -
But I could find a better use than paying for his buzz
And that is how the story goes
Most folks will lend a hand to someone down & out
If they’re trying to do the best they can
America is generous without a doubt
A compassionate and forgiving land
But the main change I would like to see
Is some personal responsibility
From the ones who think
They’re owed it all from you and me
And that is how the story goes . . .
