Hypocrite (click on title for lyrics)

(r preston maddox)
Out of place in the church pew . . .
A scrawny kid - still in high school
Downcast and lonely,
The preacher’s words cut to the bone
I wondered where love went . . .
When he talked about judgement
Could God forget all of my sin,
Knowing what I had done ?

And the preacher said
“Meet me down front and confess !
Bow down ! Humble yourself to His will -
Just keep pure, remain faithful,
Endure ‘til the end -
And Jesus takes care of the rest . . . “
So I just stood still . . .

There could be no doubt . . .
I knew that I’d never hold out
Lusts and temptations and
Weaknesses pull at my soul
I couldn’t call on the Savior . . .
And let Him down as a failure
So I stayed in my spot
‘Til I left the church empty and cold

I could never be strong enough, push come to shove
To keep myself holy and win my God’s love
I remembered my failures and my past regrets -
I just wouldn’t fake it - I’m no hypocrite !

And then a miracle found me . . .
In a hospital nursery . . .
When I picked up my daughter the first time
And I looked in her eyes . . .
Then I saw it all clearly . . .
How the Father so dearly loved me
He sent His own Son
To pay all my sin debt for life

My love for my children
Is a fraction, you see . . .
Of the depth that our Father loves me -
Now there’s no condemnation -
He’s forgotten my sin !
‘Cause Jesus took care of the rest . . .
Now I rest in Him . . .
